Welcome back to Budget Nomad! Today, we're exploring Datça, Turkey, a charming coastal town known for its scenic beauty, historical sites, and relaxed atmosphere. Whether you're looking for budget accommodation, delicious local food, or travel tips, this guide will cover everything you need to know.

Accommodation in Datça

The cost of accommodation in Datça varies greatly depending on the season and location. Prices here are generally higher compared to other parts of Turkey.

  • Budget Stays: If you're looking for an affordable place, you can find apartments starting at $140–$200 per week outside the city center. Keep in mind that this might require a 30-minute walk to get to the main attractions.

  • Mid-Range Options: If you prefer to stay in the city center, expect to pay around $250–$300 per week during the off-season.

  • High Season Rates: In peak tourist months, prices surge to $300–$400 per week for similar accommodations, especially for well-furnished apartments or hotels close to the beach.

It's essential to book in advance if you’re visiting during the summer, as demand is high.

Food and Dining

Datça has a great selection of restaurants offering delicious Turkish cuisine. One of my favorite local spots serves authentic Turkish home-cooked meals.

  • Budget Meal: A full meal, including meat dishes and side plates, can cost around 220 TL (~$7), which is reasonable for the quality and portion size.

  • Grocery Shopping: If you prefer to cook your own meals, major supermarkets in Datça include:

    • Şok and BİM: Great for budget-friendly shopping.

    • Migros: A larger supermarket near the bus station that carries a wide variety of groceries.

    • Gratis: A good option for toiletries, though Rossmann has better selections if you need imported brands.

Things to Do in Datça

Datça is a picturesque town perfect for those who enjoy both relaxation and adventure. Here are some top activities:

  1. Beach Time: The coastline is lined with stunning beaches. The main beach is calm and clean, but it has limited areas for sunbathing due to the number of beachfront cafes and restaurants.

  2. Walking and Exploring: The town is small and walkable, especially near the coast, making it easy to explore on foot.

  3. Boat Trips: Datça is famous for its boat excursions, offering day trips to nearby islands and secluded coves.

  4. Outdoor Adventures:

    • Paddleboarding and kayaking are popular in the area.

    • While Datça doesn’t have as many ATV rentals as Kaş, motorbike rentals are available for those who want to explore further.

Internet and SIM Cards

Staying connected in Datça is crucial, and there are a few SIM card providers to choose from:

  • Turk Telekom: Best for budget travelers due to its lower prices and reliable 4.5G signal.

  • Vodafone and Turkcell: Offer better overall reception but at higher prices.

Cost of SIM Cards:

  • A prepaid SIM card costs around 1000 TL (~$30), including data packages.

  • A 30GB data plan costs around $12, which includes additional perks for social media apps.

Money & Banking

Finding a good exchange rate is crucial to saving money while traveling. Halkbank offers the best rates and lowest withdrawal fees:

  • ATM Fees: Expect to pay between $3–$6 per withdrawal.

  • Comparison: British accounts are typically charged $3, while Georgian accounts are $6 per withdrawal.

  • Other Banks: Many other banks in Turkey charge $10–$15 per withdrawal, making Halkbank the best option.

Healthcare in Datça

Datça has limited healthcare facilities, but pharmacies ("eczane") are available throughout the town.

  • Hospitals & Clinics: There’s a small hospital in town, but for major treatments, you may need to travel to Marmaris or Bodrum.

  • Pharmacies: Medications like antibiotics require a prescription, so if you need anything beyond basic medicine, a doctor’s visit is required.

  • Doctor's Visit Cost: Expect to pay $80–$100 for a consultation, especially as a foreigner.

Tip: Having travel insurance is highly recommended to cover medical expenses.

Exercise & Outdoor Fitness

If you’re looking to stay active, Datça has a few options:

  • Outdoor Fitness Area: Located near the pier, featuring basic workout equipment.

  • Walking Routes: The beachfront promenade is ideal for a morning run or a scenic walk.

However, the outdoor gym is quite basic, and it may take a 20-minute walk to get there from certain areas.

Getting to & Around Datça

  • By Air: The closest airport is in Bodrum, and flights can save you a significant amount of travel time.

  • By Bus: The central bus station in Datça offers connections to nearby cities.

  • Taxis: Reliable and reasonably priced; short rides around town cost $3–$4.

  • Friendly Drivers: Taxi drivers in Datça are generally honest and helpful, making transportation easy and stress-free.

Datça is a beautiful and relaxed destination that offers a mix of beaches, cafes, and boat trips. While it’s not the cheapest place in Turkey, it’s still possible to travel on a budget by choosing affordable accommodation, eating at local restaurants, and using Halkbank for ATM withdrawals.
