Introduction
Welcome to my first travel blog entry on Budget Nomad! This marks the beginning of my round-the-world journey, where I aim to explore different cultures, experience unique destinations, and share my travel tips for budget-conscious adventurers.
My journey started at Stansted Airport, where I boarded a flight to Turkey before continuing to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. The original plan was to head to India first, but I made a last-minute change to visit Central Asia instead. Kyrgyzstan, with its breathtaking landscapes and rich nomadic culture, was calling my name, especially with the World Nomad Games set to take place in just a few days.

Getting to Kyrgyzstan
Traveling to Kyrgyzstan was an adventure in itself. I started my journey from my home in the UK, which required a six-hour bus ride to London. Given the long journey, I opted for an overnight stay at a hotel near Stansted Airport before catching my flight. Breaking up long trips like this helps prevent travel fatigue, something I highly recommend if you have a long-haul journey ahead.
My flight route took me from London to Istanbul and then onward to Bishkek. Although I didn’t have enough time to explore Turkey, I did get a chance to check out Istanbul Airport, which I’ll review in a future post.
First Impressions of Bishkek
Arriving in Bishkek, I was immediately struck by how modern and laid-back the city felt. Unlike the hustle and bustle of many other capitals, Bishkek had a slower, more relaxed pace. People were going about their daily lives without the frantic energy I’ve experienced in other major cities.
One of my first stops was Ala-Too Square, the central hub of the city. This vast square is home to the Kyrgyz State History Museum and an enormous national flag, making it a great place to start exploring. Unfortunately, the museum was closed for renovations, which was a bit of a disappointment, but that’s part of traveling—things don’t always go as planned!
Navigating Bishkek: Challenges and Wins
One of the biggest challenges I faced early on was getting cash. ATMs weren’t as easy to find as I expected, and most small shops didn’t accept card payments. Luckily, I stumbled upon a small store where I could withdraw some local currency, allowing me to finally grab a meal.
Speaking of food, my first few meals in Kyrgyzstan were simple yet delicious. I found a small local eatery where I had a traditional Kyrgyz dish. While I didn’t get a proper breakfast, I made up for it with a hearty meal later in the day.
Another challenge I faced was setting up my mobile phone. I strongly recommend getting a SIM card at the airport, as finding one in the city can be tricky. Most people don’t speak English, which made communication difficult when trying to buy a local SIM.
Exploring the Osh Bazaar
One of the highlights of my first day was visiting Osh Bazaar, Bishkek’s bustling marketplace. The atmosphere was incredible—crowded, noisy, and full of life. The market was filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, and all sorts of local goods. This is definitely the place to shop if you’re on a budget, as prices here are much lower than in supermarkets. I picked up some bananas and apples, though I suspect I paid a bit more than the locals—one of the small downsides of being a foreign traveler.
Final Thoughts and Travel Tips
Kyrgyzstan is proving to be an exciting and unique destination. The combination of Soviet-era architecture, a strong nomadic culture, and stunning natural landscapes makes it a fascinating place to explore. Here are a few takeaways from my first experience in Bishkek:
Break up long journeys to avoid exhaustion, especially if traveling from far away.
Withdraw cash at the airport or bring some local currency in advance to avoid any issues.
Get a SIM card upon arrival to ensure you have connectivity, as finding one later can be difficult.
Explore local markets like Osh Bazaar for affordable fresh produce and an authentic experience.
This is just the beginning of my Kyrgyzstan adventure. In the next post, I’ll be diving deeper into the cultural and natural wonders this country has to offer. Stay tuned!
